DSM-5 Release Set

DSM-5: The Future of Psychiatric Diagnosis

"Publication of the fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in May 2013 will mark one the most anticipated events in the mental health field. As part of the development process, the preliminary draft revisions to the current diagnostic criteria for psychiatric diagnoses are now available for public review and comment. We thank you for your interest in DSM-5 and hope that you use this opportunity not only to learn more about the proposed changes in DSM-5, but also about its history, its impact, and its developers. Please continue to check this site for updates to criteria and for more information about the development process." APA, http://www.dsm5.org/
(This is my beloved DSM-IV-TR, or Diagnostic Statistical Manual, 4th Edition, Revised)

I have a love hate relationship with the DSM. I took a couple of classes during my undergraduate years that went over the DSM, Diagnosing, etc. They were some of my favorite classes too! But the difficult part of my relationship with the "Pscyhological Bible" is that once you diagnose someone, that diagnosis sticks with them for the rest of their lives. They are no longer known as Bill by insurance agencies or Doctors, they are known as Bill with diagnosable 296.89 Bipolar II Disorder. But at the same time, the illness needs a diagnoses in order for it to be treatable and distinguished from other ailments. How do you fight something that truly was created for the better good of the Psychiatric world?

Stop by the website that I have listed above and see the proposed changes; such as:

  • Asperger's Sydrome
  • The change of "Mental Disability" to "Intellectual Disability"
  • The introduction of "High Risk" of descriptors
  • Estimation of the Risk of Suicide in adults and teens, based on the occurrence of mental disorders
The general public can leave comments and thoughts about the proposed additions/changes, because in the end this affects each and every one of us in some way.

Air Supply Concert

Friday night I went to the Air Supply concert in Wendover and it was A-MAZING!  Man can these guys rock, even after 35 years of them being together they can still put on a show! (They may have pulled a groin while hitting the high notes though!)

I went on a date with Jared, we have gone on a couple of dates...yes, this is the first time I am introducing a guy on my blog, and two other couples that he is friends with.  Jared rented a car that would seat all six of us and we left Friday afternoon and drove out to Wendover to the Peppermill Concert Hall.  The Concert Hall was not what I expected, it was so much nicer than I thought it would be.  It is small enough that there is no such thing as a bad seat!

(Disclaimer: Jared has Bell's Palsy right now, temporary paralysis of the right side of his face so he is even cuter;)

Towards the end of the concert, the two lead band members came out into the crowds while they were singing and one of Jared's friends bet me I couldn't get close to the lead singer.  So as he came up to where we were sitting, I ran up to him and put my arm around him while Jared was trying to grab a pic but as my ghetto camera finally took the picture he was walking away so it looks like he was pushing me away lol.

I had such a fun night! Thanks Jared!

Back on the Wagon

The "Healthy Lifestyle" wagon that is! Seriously though, if I really was walking next to a wagon like the pioneers did I wouldn't be in this predicament that I am.  Is it a predicament, a situation, a circumstance, or just what life has given me and I choose to make what I want out of it....or all of the above?  ANYWAYS, there is point to all this rambling....I have been slacking on posting my weight and measurements lately and thought, "hey girl, who said there is a rule to which day you do it?" and then my other self said, "hey, we like this girl that doesn't go by the rules!".

(By the way, I have been up since 4:30 am, was at work at 6:30 am and got home at 5 pm, so if this doesn't make sense, just keep that in mind)

Here we go my dear friendly friends, as of January 13, 2010:

-19 pounds
-2 inches of the bustal area
-3 inches of the ribcage area
-3 inches of the abdomen/tire/doughnut area
